Investing in Youth: Strengthening Our Communities
Youth are not only “the future,” they are central to our community. Supporting their curiosity has resulted in creating weekly activities for students and families at Roosevelt Elementary, along with making scholarship, internship, and summer opportunities available.
21st Century Program
Backpack To-Go Friday“Watering Planted Seeds” – Mindfulness Matters. Students participate in daily activities that promote social-emotional learning and development.
Every afternoon, @75 kindergarten to sixth grade students who are part of the 21st Century Program, engage in activities that contribute to their individual success.
This program follows an approved curriculum by Roosevelt educators.
The program offers:

- 1-on-1 Tutoring, STEM Activities
- Healthy Snack and Hot Meal
- Assistance with Basic Necessities
- “Backpack Friday” – bags containing things like Milk, Fruit, Vegetables, Ravioli, Cereal, Granola Bar, Peanut Butter, Grape Jelly, Cheese, Chocolate
- and assist the families in purchasing some of the needed supplies.

We would not be able to sustain this program without our many partner agencies including: The Foodbank Miami Valley, Sinclair College, University of Dayton, Wright State University, Fifth Third Bank, Dayton Cooks, Girls Emerging Into Maturity, Roosevelt Elementary, Gem City Career Prep High School, and more.
The Equity Center staff and volunteers assists with Roosevelt’s Resource Center by:

- Working collaboratively with the school principal, staff, and leadership team to ensure alignment of all activities, opportunities and resources to support the indicators and metrics outlined by the district.
- Conducting surveys and focus groups with families and community members to identify specific needs and barriers.
- Identifying key community partners (local organizations, businesses, and service providers) to collaborate with.
- Creating outreach strategies to inform families about available resources and programs.
- Developing a centralized resource center that offers information on local services, programs, and educational opportunities.
- Facilitating access to tutoring, and mentoring programs.
- Creating hygiene kits containing essentials like soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, and feminine products.
- Distributing these kits at the center and during school events.
- Organizing a drive to collect new or gently used uniforms from families and local businesses.
- Assembling school supply kits with essential items (notebooks, pencils, backpacks, etc.) to distribute at the beginning of the school year

In addition to Equity Center staff, for the afterschool programs, the center employs six paid personnel along with four volunteers. Annual costs incurred are about $3,000/per student and $15,000 per additional paid personnel.
