Our Pillars of Equity

Education

Youth are not only “the future,” they are central to our community now. Supporting their curiosity has resulted in creating weekly activities for students and families at Roosevelt Elementary, along with making scholarship, internship, and camp opportunities available.

Workforce Development

The dignity and interdependence that come with career opportunities embolden us to find pathways for people to broaden their skills.  The POWER Pathway is a training course designed especially for returning citizens. We also believe that learning is a lifelong discipline, which has motivated us to provide educational opportunities for people throughout life’s stages.

Food & Neighborhood Security

We recognize that stable and secure communities require networks of mutual aid. A number of partners enable us to feed over 50 families a week, provide access to essential hygiene items, and affordable clothing. As the Dayton chapter of the nonpartisan Ohio Unity Coalition, we ensure that Black voters find elections safe and accessible; we also empower community members to organize neighbors and advocate equitable treatment.

Creative Incubator

Here at the Equity Center, we’re more than just food security, education, workforce development and healthcare initiatives; we’re also Ground Zero for dreams and ideas to take flight and come alive. As a Creative Incubator, we’re a hub for innovation. If you have a dream, a passion, a business idea or a way to improve processes and help change the world, we want you. Everyone deserves their dreams and we are dedicated to being a spring off platform in the greatest capacity; we can assist you on a journey of  success.

HONORARY STREET RENAMING CEREMONY ANNOUNCEMENT

Celebrating the Legacy of Raymond Hummons Sr.

It is with profound respect, gratitude, and heartfelt enthusiasm that The Equity Center, McKinley United Methodist Church, and the wider Dayton community invite you to a historic moment of recognition and celebration.

For more than eight decades, Mr. Raymond Hummons Sr. has embodied the very best of Dayton—faithful service, steadfast leadership, and quiet dedication that has shaped our community. Affectionately known as “Mr. McKinley,” his life reflects a deep commitment to faith, family, and Dayton.

A proud Dunbar High School alumnus, Class of 1958, he continues to serve as class chair. He is a Past Master at Equity Lodge 121, & a Grand Inspector General Honorary 33rd

Mr. Hummons’ influence extends far beyond the church walls. His mentorship and advocacy helped inspire the formation of The Equity Center, which now provides thousands with access to workforce training, food security, education, and community resettlement services. Working alongside fellow mentor John E. Our Beginnings

From conversation amongst the Pastor of Mckinley United Methodist Church, Peter Edward Matthews, and three pillars of the church, John E. Moore, Sr., Raymond Hummons, Sr., and Lisa Turner came the Dayton Equity Center. Late nights and long days from January of 2017 led us to begin programming inspired by the legacy of John Moore Sr. We continue the legacy of Mr. Moore and many others by intentionally listening to the community and involving local partners to create opportunities for social mobility.
